Past Pandemic Responses To Provide Lessons For The Future – Berita Terkini

JAKARTA – Efforts in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic in the past year must be used as lessons. In the early days of the pandemic, sharp changes are seen within the monthly based chart. It was seen that positive cases which usually had been increasing, has sloped down, but then again rose sharply again. In the early months, death cases are difficult to prevent.

All elements of the nation tirelessly work hand in hand to make the Pentahelix Collaboration happen. Collaboration consisting of government, private sector, volunteers, and health workers at health facilities, laboratories, hospitals at regional and central levels. With time and lessons learned, the Covid-19 cases has gradually improved.

“We appreciate every party, both from the government and elements of society who move together to create Pentahelix collaboration in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia,” Spokesperson for the Covid-19 Task Force, Prof. Wiku Adisasmito gave a press statement on the International Media Briefing at Graha BNPB, Monday (8/3/2021) as broadcast on the BNPB Indonesia YouTube channel.

Looking at the Covid-19 data development, from March 2020 to January 2021, positive cases experienced an increased trend, but then decreased in February 2021. In this case, the trend varied by each month. As in the graph of the first 4 months of the pandemic, there was a sharp increase of up to 70-90 percent.

“These are the times when Indonesia is faced with a sudden pandemic, and the government is trying to accelerate the mitigation as much as possible, one of which is by implementing the Large-Scale Social Restriction (PSBB) policy,” he explained.

In the development of the pandemic during 2020, periods of long holidays resulted a sharp increase in positive cases. Covid-19 data in September 2020 showed an increase of 42.3 percent or 45,895 cases. This is most likely due to the contribution of the long holiday, on the 15-17 and 2 -23 August 2020. However, in the following months, the daily cases tends to decrease, namely in September – October and November 2020, although cases are still increasing.

Furthermore, the cases again rose sharply in December 2020 to January 2021, reaching 190.191 cases, or an increase of more than 100 percent compared to October 2020. This sharp increase was due to the impact of the of Christmas and 2021 New Year’s long holiday period.

“By looking at the trend of cases due to the impact of the long holiday, we must reflect and learn from the experience of dealing with the pandemic in the last 10 months. So that it does not happen again in the future,” Wiku hoped.

By all, the worst impact of case spikes in long holiday periods are death cases that arose. Comparing data on months without long holidays, the number of deaths are 50-900 cases. On the other hand, during the months with long holidays, the death rate rose sharply to 1.000-2.000 cases. “Imagine that in 1 month we could lose more than 1000 lives, just because we chose to travel and have a vacation,” Wiku regretted.

For this reason, considering that 1 year of the pandemic in Indonesia fell in early 2021, Wiku suggested that the government and society should learn to make wiser decisions. “So as not to endanger the lives of yourself and others,” he continued.
